General Purpose Rating Course

The General Purpose Rating Course is a 6-month residential pre-sea training program approved by the Director General of Shipping, Government of India. Offered through Indian Merchant Navy Careers, this course prepares candidates to work in both major operational departments of a ship — the Deck Department and the Engine Department. While Deck and Engine Rating programs are typically offered separately, the GP Rating course combines training in both areas, providing broader skills and better career flexibility.

Course Overview

The General Purpose Rating program includes training in:

  • Seamanship and deck operations
  • Cargo handling basics
  • Engine room assistance and machinery support
  • Maintenance and safety procedures
  • STCW (mandatory safety training)

This course equips candidates with practical knowledge and discipline required to work efficiently onboard Merchant Navy vessels.

Eligibility Criteria for GP Rating Course

To apply for the GP Rating course, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Passed 10th standard or above from a recognized board

  • Medically and physically fit for sea service
  • 6/6 eyesight and no colour blindness
  • Age between 18 to 25 years

Meeting these eligibility criteria ensures that candidates qualify for maritime training and shipboard employment.

These certifications are essential identification and qualification documents required to work onboard ships.

Career Opportunities After GP Rating Course

After successful completion of the training, candidates can join ships as:

  1. Ordinary Seaman (Deck)
  2. Wiper (Engine Department)
  3. General Purpose Rating Crew

With sea time and experience, candidates can progress to higher ranks such as AB (Able Seaman) or Oiler. Career advancement depends on performance, sea service duration, and certification examinations.
