Diploma in Nautical Science

The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one-year residential program (divided into two semesters) offered through Indian Merchant Navy Careers, approved by Indian Maritime University (IMU) and the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. This program is designed to prepare cadets for a professional career in the deck department of Merchant Navy ships.

The DNS course pathway leads to:

  • B.Sc. Nautical Science (after prescribed sea service)
  • 2nd Mate (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency

We train cadets with the technical knowledge, navigational skills, and discipline required to become competent navigating officers onboard Merchant Navy vessels worldwide.

Eligibility Criteria for DNS Course

To apply for the DNS program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • 10+2 with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM
  • B.Sc. (with Physics) / B.E. / B.Tech with minimum 55% marks
  • Minimum 50% marks in English (10th / 10+2 / Degree)
  • Medically and physically fit for sea service
  • 6/6 eyesight and no colour blindness
  • Age between 18 to 25 years

Meeting these criteria ensures eligibility for maritime training and certification progression.

Career Progression After DNS

The typical career pathway includes:

  1. Completion of 12-month DNS program (Semester 1 & 2 – IMU) along with mandatory STCW training
  2. Join as Deck Cadet / Junior Officer for 18 months onboard training (Semesters 3, 4 & 5 through distance learning)
  3. Awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science by IMU
  4. Complete Post-Sea preparatory course and obtain 2nd Mate Certificate of Competency
  5. Sail as 3rd Officer / 2nd Officer
  6. Obtain Chief Mate (1st Mate) Certificate of Competency after required sea service
  7. Advance to Master Mariner and sail as Captain of the vessel
