B.Sc. Nautical Science

The B.Sc. Nautical Science is a 3-year degree program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. Offered through Indian Merchant Navy Careers, this course prepares cadets for a professional career in the deck department of Merchant Navy vessels.

The program includes:

  • 1-year residential pre-sea training
  • 12 months onboard sea training
  • 4-month post-sea preparatory course (2nd Mate Function)

After successful completion of training and examinations, candidates are awarded:

  • B.Sc. Degree in Nautical Science by Indian Maritime University (IMU)
  • Certificate of Competency issued by the Director General of Shipping

Eligibility Criteria for B.Sc. Nautical Science

To apply for this course, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English as separate subjects
  • Minimum 60% aggregate in PCM
  • Minimum 50% marks in English (10th or 10+2)
  • Medically and physically fit for sea service
  • 6/6 eyesight and no colour blindness
  • Age between 18 to 25 years

Career Progression After B.Sc. Nautical Science

The typical career pathway includes:

  1. Completion of 12-month Pre Sea Training (Semester 1 & 2 – IMU) along with mandatory STCW courses
  2. Join as Deck Cadet onboard a vessel for 12 months sea training
  3. Complete 4-month post-sea preparatory course and obtain 2nd Mate Certificate of Competency
  4. Sail as 3rd Officer / 2nd Officer
  5. Obtain Chief Mate (1st Mate) Certificate of Competency after required sea service
  6. Advance to Master Mariner and sail as Captain of the vessel
