Graduate in Marine Engineering

The Graduate in Marine Engineering (GME) is a 12-month Pre Sea training program designed for Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture graduates who wish to build a professional career in the Merchant Navy as Marine Engineers. Offered through Indian Merchant Navy Careers, this course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, and prepares candidates with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to work in the engine department of ships.

  • Minimum 50% marks in English (10th / 10+2)
  • Medically and physically fit for sea service
  • 6/6 eyesight and no colour blindness
  • Age between 18 to 25 years

Certificates Awarded

After successful completion of the GME course:

  • Candidates become eligible for Certificates of Competency as per DG Shipping norms
  • Certifications are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India

These certifications are mandatory for progressing to higher engineering ranks onboard Merchant Navy vessels.

Career Progression After GME

The typical career pathway includes:

  1. Completion of 12-month Pre Sea GME training
  2. Join as Junior / Trainee Engineer onboard ship
  3. Appear for Class IV Certificate of Competency
  4. Sail as 4th Engineer
  5. Progress to 3rd Engineer after obtaining Class II certification
  6. Advance to 2nd Engineer and eventually Chief Engineer with experience and higher certification
